Our March speaker was James Raffan, current Director of External Relations for the Canadian Canoe Museum and for 19 years a Professor of Outdoor & Experiential Education at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Based on his wealth of experience from many years of study and three years of travel in the Arctic Circle, James shared his perspective on these northern landscapes and societies in the midst of enormous change. James also described the early history and current status of the Canadian Canoe Museum, including its maturation to a Canadian icon soon to be embodied in an amazing new facility located at the site of Peterborough’s Lift Lock. James Raffan is a prolific writer, speaker, and geographer who is currently the Director of External Relations for The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough. For 19 years a Professor of Outdoor nd Experiential Education at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario, over the years he has produced 16 books and written for media outlets including Canadian Geographic, National Geographic, The Globe and Mail, as well as for CBC Radio and The Discovery Channel. James is a community activist and volunteer, a Fellow International of the Explorers Club, Past Chair of the Arctic Institute of North America as well as a Fellow and Past Gover-nor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, James has received many awards for his work.
